About fat transfer
What is fat transfer?
Fat transfer, also known as fat grafting, is a surgical body contouring technique that uses your own body fat as a natural filler for other parts of your body or face. This procedure uses liposuction to remove unwanted fat (adipose tissue) from areas like the abdomen or flanks, purifies the fat, and then injects it into other areas that need more fullness, such as the breasts, buttocks, face, or hands.
We can use fat transfer to achieve an hourglass figure, a fuller bust, a sculpted musculature, or even a more youthful facial appearance. With advancements in fat transfer technology, this procedure is now a highly sought-after alternative to traditional fillers or implants, offering a long-lasting natural solution.

Fat transfer candidacy
Am I a good candidate for fat transfer?
In order to qualify for fat transfer surgery, you will need to have enough excess fat in areas like the abdomen, thighs, or flanks to be harvested. Lean patients with very low body fat may not have enough excess fat for harvesting.
Ideal candidates are in good overall health, do not smoke, and have realistic expectations about the results. During your consultation, we will help determine if you are a suitable candidate for fat transfer surgery.
Most patients choose fat transfer to enhance their waist-to-hip ratio for an hourglass shape or to add volume to facial features like the cheeks, lips, or under-eye area.

WITH FAT TRANSFER, WE CAN FIX:

Gaunt or sunken facial features

About fat transfer
Types of fat transfer procedures
The most common areas for fat transfer are the breasts, buttocks (commonly known as a Brazilian butt lift or a BBL), face, and hands.
Fat transfer to the breasts adds natural-looking volume to the breasts, which is usually a maximum of about one cup size. This method of breast augmentation may not create the same roundness or upper pole volume as breast implants, but it offers a natural, long-lasting result without the need for implant replacements.
A Brazilian butt lift typically removes fat from the abdomen, shrinking the waist, and uses it to increase the size of the butt and hips, sculpting an hourglass shape.
A facial fat transfer helps restore fullness in areas like the cheeks, under-eye hollows, and lips. This procedure is often performed with other anti-aging procedures, such as a facelift, to achieve a more youthful, rejuvenated look.

Expectations
What to expect throughout your fat transfer procedure
During fat transfer surgery, you may receive local anesthesia, where you’re awake but don’t feel any pain, or general anesthesia, where you are asleep during the procedure. Your surgeon will discuss which option is best for you, given the areas being treated and your comfort levels.
A fat transfer procedure is a three-step process. First, liposuction is used to gently remove excess fat from your chosen areas, most often the abdomen, flanks, or back. The harvested fat is then purified to ensure the best results possible. In the last stage of the procedure, the purified fat is meticulously reinjected into areas needing improvement, where it will develop a new blood supply and integrate into the surrounding tissue.
Your surgical team will explain the procedure in more detail during your pre-operative appointments to make sure you know exactly what the surgery will entail.

Fat transfer recovery
Results and recovery process
Recovery after a fat transfer procedure varies depending on the amount of liposuction and the areas treated. You may experience some swelling, bruising, and soreness in both the donor and recipient sites for a few weeks after surgery.
For the first six weeks, your body will naturally absorb some of the transferred fat, typically around 20-50%. During this time, you’ll need to avoid placing pressure on treated areas to prevent damage. We often transfer more fat than needed to over-correct for this initial fat absorption period, so you may notice more volume at first due to both swelling and the extra fat.
Final results gradually become visible as your body adjusts, with the fat settling over the following months. It can take up to six months for the full results to appear as your body stabilizes.

Frequently Asked Questions
The best candidate for fat transfer is typically someone in good overall health with sufficient fat in areas like the abdomen, thighs, or flanks, who is looking to improve volume and contour in areas such as the face, breasts, or buttocks.
Your body will not reject fat that is correctly isolated, cleaned, and purified. Since we use your body’s own tissue, there is no risk of allergic reaction or rejection.
In general, approximately 50-80% of the fat survives after fat transfer, although this can vary by patient.
Fat transfer results are permanent. While some fat is naturally reabsorbed by the body within the first six weeks, the fat cells that remain will integrate and last indefinitely.
Fat transfer procedures are limited by the amount of volume that can be added compared to implants, potential unevenness, and not all transferred fat survives, meaning some reabsorption occurs. Patients may need multiple procedures to achieve desired results.
Fat transfers are done under anesthesia, so you won’t feel pain during the procedure. After surgery, you can expect some soreness and discomfort. Most patients find that the pain is manageable with prescribed medication.
