About facelift

What is a facelift?

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that improves signs of aging in the face and neck. This procedure lifts and tightens sagging tissues to restore a refreshed, more youthful appearance. By removing excess skin and fat, repositioning the facial tissues, and smoothing the skin, a facelift elevates and redefines facial contours.

Other procedures that may be performed with a facelift are a brow lift, neck lift, or eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). For some patients, fat transfer or fillers may be recommended to restore volume in the face.

Facelift candidacy

Am I a good candidate for a facelift?

A consultation with a plastic surgeon is the best way to determine if a facelift is right for you. We will go over your specific concerns and goals to determine if a facelift or any other procedures are best suited for you. Ideal candidates for a facelift are generally healthy individuals with a positive outlook and realistic expectations.

Patients will show signs of enough skin laxity in the face and neck for a facelift. They may have mild or moderately lax skin in the face or neck, or more pronounced sagging and deep facial folds they want to address.

WITH A FACELIFT, WE CAN FIX:

  • Drooping or sagging cheeks

  • Deep folds around the mouth

  • Wrinkles on the cheeks and neck

  • Loss of jawline definition (jowls)

  • Facial fat that has fallen or disappeared

  • General tired or aged facial appearance

About facelift

Types of facelift procedures

Each facelift is tailored to your unique facial anatomy, the extent of correction needed, and your personal aesthetic goals. The main types of facelifts include: Mini, standard, and deep plane facelift. Your surgeon will discuss which option is best for you during your consultation.

Patients with a mild degree of sagging are often good candidates for a mini-facelift. This less invasive option allows your surgeon to tighten deep facial tissues through shorter incisions along the hairline. Through these incisions, the cheeks are lifted and tightened to correct jowling, refine the jawline, and awaken the face.

Also known as the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) technique, a standard or traditional facelift addresses moderate to advanced aging in the mid-face, jawline, and neck. Through incisions hidden behind the hairline, your surgeon respositions deep tissues to remove excess skin and smooth creases.

Some patients require a deep plane facelift to reposition deeper tissues and underlying muscles of the face. This allows your surgeon to achieve thorough lifting without pulling the skin too tightly, for a more natural look.

Expectations

What to expect throughout your facelift procedure

Before the procedure, anesthesia is administered. You will be given either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation to numb the area and keep you comfortable. Your surgeon will recommend the best type of anesthesia for your procedure.

After making the appropriate incisions, typically along the hairline, around the ears, and sometimes beneath the chin, we will reposition the fat and tissues under the skin, remove jowls and excess skin, and gently lay the remaining skin over the newly lifted, firmer foundation. The incisions are then sealed with sutures and sometimes surgical skin glue.

Your surgeon will give you detailed information on the procedure during your pre-operative appointments.

Facelift recovery

Results and recovery process

After your procedure, bandages will be placed around your face to help reduce swelling and bruising, and small drainage tubes may be used to remove excess fluid. Once the initial swelling and bruising subsides, you’ll be able to see the results, with improved facial contours and a more youthful appearance.

Most patients are back at work in one to two weeks after a facelift, and are presentable to the public within 10-14 days. You’ll be able to start exercising after around four weeks following a standard facelift. Typically, recovery times are shorter for a mini facelift. It may take two to three months for your face to feel normal again in terms of texture and any post-surgery tightness.

Facelift cost

How much does a facelift cost?

The cost of a facelift is contingent on the surgeon’s experience, where their office is based, the extent of your facelift procedure (mini vs standard), and whether other procedures are incorporated into the procedure. There may be additional costs for anesthesia used, operating room facilities, or other related fees. We will discuss these expenses with you and provide a more precise estimate during your consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

A mini facelift is a less invasive facelift designed to target early signs of aging, particularly around the lower face and jawline. It involves smaller incisions than a traditional facelift, resulting in less downtime and quicker recovery while achieving a more youthful, natural appearance.

You may be a good candidate for a facelift if you are in good general health, have realistic expectations, and are bothered by signs of aging like excess, sagging skin or deep facial folds.

The results of a facelift can last for up to 10 years. While the procedure can “turn back the clock”, the natural aging process will continue, and some patients may choose to undergo touch-up treatments or additional procedures in the future.

A facelift is performed under anesthesia, so there is no pain during the procedure. Some discomfort, swelling, and bruising are common during recovery, but most patients only use prescribed pain medications for the first week after surgery.

You will need to take about one to two weeks off work, depending on the extent of your procedure and your recovery.
