About blepharoplasty
What is blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgery performed to rejuvenate the appearance of the skin and tissue surrounding the eyes. Also known as eyelid surgery or an eye lift, this procedure opens up the eyes, giving you a more refreshed, youthful appearance.
This procedure removes excess skin and fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids to address concerns such as drooping eyelids, eye bags, wrinkles, and other signs of aging around the eyes. For a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation, many patients choose to combine blepharoplasty with other procedures, such as a facelift or brow lift.

Blepharoplasty candidacy
Am I a good candidate for blepharoplasty?
You are likely a good candidate for blepharoplasty if you are in good overall health, have no serious eye conditions, and have realistic expectations for the outcome. During your consultation, you will meet with a plastic surgeon who will help determine if eyelid surgery is right for you.
Patients typically undergo cosmetic blepharoplasty to reduce sagging skin that creates folds within the contour of the upper eyelid, which can sometimes obstruct vision. Others are looking to correct under-eye bags or puffiness that ages them.

WITH BLEPHAROPLASTY, WE CAN FIX:
Loose or sagging upper eyelids that may limit vision
Under eye puffiness from fat deposits
Bags under the eyes
Drooping lower eyelids that reveal the whites of the eyes
Excess skin and fine wrinkles on the eyelids
About blepharoplasty
Types of blepharoplasty procedures
There are two main types of blepharoplasty: upper eyelid and lower eyelid blepharoplasty. Your surgeon will determine which approach is best for you, and in some cases, may need to perform both upper and lower eyelid surgery.
Upper eyelid blepharoplasty focuses on removing drooping skin and excess fat on the upper eyelids to improve your appearance or help you see better.
Lower eyelid blepharoplasty targets the fat pads that cause bags and dark circles under the eyes. During the procedure, excess fat and skin are removed, and the muscles are tightened to create a smoother under-eye contour.

Expectations
What to expect throughout your blepharoplasty procedure
Depending on your surgery, you will be given local anesthesia with intravenous sedation, or general anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the surgery. Your surgeon will recommend the best option for you.
During blepharoplasty, we will make very small incisions along the natural lines of the upper and lower eyelid to precisely remove excess skin from your eyelid(s). We may also adjust fat or tighten muscles to provide the most natural results. Eyelid surgery usually takes around 45 minutes to 2 hours, taking longer if both the upper and lower eyelids were done together and if you had another procedure performed at the same time.
After the procedure is complete, we will close the incisions with dissolvable sutures. We use advanced techniques that often eliminate the need for bandaging after surgery. We may apply an eye lubricant that somewhat blurs your vision temporarily right after surgery and a soothing antibiotic ointment to aid healing.

Blepharoplasty recovery
Results and recovery process
After eyelid surgery, your results will gradually become more visible as swelling subsides, revealing an improved eye appearance.
The recovery period typically lasts up to two weeks. During this time, expect some swelling, bruising, mild irritation, and some eye fatigue, which will subside after one to two weeks. Cold compresses, prescribed medications, and elevating your head while sleeping can help alleviate discomfort.
You’ll need to avoid lifting, straining, or bending for up to four weeks. Most patients return to work within 7-10 days, though full healing may take a few months.

How much does eyelid surgery cost?
The cost of blepharoplasty can vary depending on several factors, including the surgeon’s experience and credentials, geographic location, and the specific technique required to achieve your desired results. Additional fees, such as anesthesia, surgical facility fees, and post-operative care, may also affect the overall price.
Insurance coverage for blepharoplasty
Most insurance plans do not cover blepharoplasty when it's done purely for cosmetic reasons. However, if the procedure is required to correct vision impairment caused by drooping eyelids, a portion of the cost may be covered. At our office, we offer payment plans to help with costs, which we can discuss with you during your initial consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Blepharoplasty is most commonly performed on patients over 40, as this is when excess skin and drooping eyelids typically become more prominent. However, younger individuals may also choose this procedure if they have inherited hooded eyelids or eyelid bags.
Blepharoplasty results can be long-lasting, with lower eyelid surgery providing essentially permanent results, as the fat and eyelid bags removed should not return. However, the upper eyelids may begin to sag over time, with results generally lasting up to 10 to 15 years, although this varies by patient.
Blepharoplasty surgery is generally not very painful, as it is performed under local anesthesia or sedation, which helps minimize discomfort during the procedure. After surgery, patients may experience mild swelling, bruising, or a sensation of tightness, which can usually be managed with pain medication and typically subsides within a few days.
Most patients feel comfortable going out in public in about 10 to 14 days after eyelid surgery, although swelling and bruising may linger for longer. The appearance of your eyes will continue to improve over one to three months.
You may be awake during blepharoplasty if local anesthesia with sedation is used, or fully asleep if general anesthesia is chosen. Either way, you will remain comfortable and pain-free throughout the procedure.
After eyelid surgery, your eyes may become tired easily and sensitive to bright light. Watching TV may place too much strain on your eyes, so you’ll need to avoid screen time for the first few days to allow for proper healing.
