About breast implant removal
What is breast implant removal?
Breast implant removal, also known as explant surgery, is a procedure performed to remove implants from a previous breast augmentation or reconstruction. The surrounding scar tissue or silicone material from leaks may also be removed.
This procedure can be followed by implant replacement or revision, a breast lift to reshape the breasts, or breasts may be left in their natural state.

Breast implant removal candidacy
Am I a good candidate for breast implant removal?
Breast implants are not lifelong devices and generally last 10 years. Over time, they may need to be removed or replaced, either due to medical or personal reasons.
The most common reasons for breast implant removal are implant rupture, leakage, or capsular contracture, where scar tissue tightens around the implant, causing pain. Less common complications, such as infection or breast implant related illness, may also require removal. Some patients simply no longer want breast implants.
Generally, if you are in good physical health, at a stable weight, and have realistic expectations, you may be a good candidate for breast implant removal. During your consultation, we will discuss whether removing your implants is the best option for you.

WITH BREAST IMPLANT REMOVAL, WE CAN FIX:

About breast implant removal
Types of breast implant removal procedures
There are different techniques that may be used to remove implants and the capsule (scar tissue). During your consultation, your surgeon will listen closely to your concerns and recommend the surgical technique that is best for you based on your needs.
The implant is removed, leaving the surrounding capsule in place.
For mild cases of capsular contracture, a partial capsulectomy removes the implant and part of the surrounding capsule.
Patients with more severe capsular contracture or other complications may require total capsulectomy to remove the implant and the entire capsule.
An en bloc capsulectomy meticulously removes the implant and the capsule together as a single unit.
Some patients may choose to have a breast implant revision, which exchanges implants to improve breast size, shape, or symmetry.

Expectations
What to expect throughout your breast implant removal procedure
This procedure is performed under general anesthesia to ensure a comfortable, painless experience. The complexity of the surgery can vary depending on the reason for removal, the specific procedure used, and whether additional corrective procedures are needed. The surgery can take anywhere from one and three hours in total.
When possible, we will make incisions over the original ones used for implant placement to reduce new scarring. The implants are then removed either with or without the scar tissue. If capsular contracture is present, your surgeon may remove part or all of the capsule. Once the procedure is done, incisions are meticulously closed with sutures, clips, or adhesives to support proper healing.
During your pre-operative appointments, your doctor will review the surgical plan with you and explain the specific techniques that will be used.

Breast implant removal recovery
Results and recovery process
The results of breast implant removal surgery largely depends on the size of the implants that were removed and the remaining breast tissue and scar tissue. In general, recovery can take a few weeks to a few months, although it can take up to one year to see the final results.
After surgery, you may be placed in a surgical garment to reduce swelling. You may also have drains to remove excess fluid. Pain medications are administered before, during, and after the procedure to make the recovery process as comfortable as possible.
You should plan to take at least one week off work and other regular activities. You’ll be able to start exercising four to six weeks after surgery or following your surgeon’s instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions
You may be a good candidate if you're experiencing complications such as pain or discomfort due to hardening scar tissue, implant rupture or leakage, or other concerns. The best way to know if you qualify for a breast implant removal is by consulting with a board-certified plastic surgeon.
This depends on factors such as the size of implants removed and your skin’s elasticity. Typically, after implant removal, there’s some loose skin and breasts may sag. Some patients choose to have a breast lift to remove excess skin and improve breast contour after removal.
Since anesthesia is used, you do not feel any pain during the procedure itself. After surgery, most patients report mild pain and soreness, which is manageable with prescribed pain medication and over-the-counter pain relievers.
Recovery from breast implant removal surgery typically takes about four to six weeks in total, with most patients returning to work within a week. It can take a few months to fully heal and see final results.
If you don't replace your breast implants, they may eventually lead to issues such as capsular contracture, which can cause pain and changes in breast shape. Implants can also rupture or leak over time. It's important to have regular screening to monitor their condition and discuss any necessary replacements with your surgeon.
