About breast augmentation

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation surgery, also known as a “boob job”, breast enlargement, or augmentation mammaplasty uses breast implants or fat transfer to enhance the size and shape of breasts.

This procedure can achieve a more rounded, perkier breast shape, increase upper pole fullness, improve symmetry, as well as create a more balanced, proportional figure overall.

Breast augmentation candidacy

Am I a good candidate for breast augmentation?

Ideal candidates for breast augmentation are in generally good health and have realistic expectations for breast enhancement. It’s important to have fully developed breasts before considering the procedure. You may also be a good candidate if you’re looking to correct asymmetry or restore breast volume due to weight loss, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or aging. Sometimes, a breast lift is required alongside a breast augmentation to correct overly sagging or drooping breasts - this is referred to as a BAM (breast augmentation mastopexy).

During your consultation, your surgeon will evaluate your medical history, go over personal goals, and perform a full body examination to make sure that you are a good candidate for breast augmentation.

WITH BREAST AUGMENTATION, WE CAN FIX:

  • Small breasts

  • Asymmetrical breasts

  • Elongated shaped breasts

  • One or more abnormally developed breasts

  • Lack of fullness in the upper portion of the breasts

  • Loss of breast volume after weight loss, pregnancy or breastfeeding

About breast implants

Types of breast implants

There are two main types of breast implants: silicone and saline implants. During your consultation, we will discuss the filling type, size, shape, and the projection or profile of implants available to help you decide which implants are best for you.

Silicone implants are one of the most popular implants used in breast augmentations due to their natural look and feel. They are pre-filled with silicone gel that feels like natural breast tissue, and due to its cohesive texture the cohesive breast implants are often referred to as “silicone gummy bear” implants. Silicone implants come in a variety of sizes, but once placed, they cannot be adjusted, so it’s important that patients are completely satisfied with the chosen size and appearance before committing to the procedure.

Saline implants are inserted while empty. Once in place, they are filled with a sterile saline solution to your desired size. This gives your surgeon the flexibility to adjust the amount of the solution, building up the implants to achieve the exact size and shape that you have chosen.

Expectations

What to expect throughout your breast augmentation procedure

Breast augmentation surgery is performed under anesthesia for your comfort and takes approximately one to one and a half hours to complete.

Your surgeon will make discreet incisions in areas like the crease under the breast, around the areola, or under the arm. Prior to surgery, your doctor and you will discuss which incision option is best for your anatomy and desired results. After the incisions are made, the implants are carefully inserted either behind the breast tissue or under the chest muscle, and the incisions are closed with sutures.

Your plastic surgeon and our team will discuss all aspects of the procedure with you during your consultation.

Breast augmentation recovery

Results and recovery process

While breast augmentation surgery delivers larger breasts right away, it can take a few weeks to see final results as swelling subsides and your implants settle into their final position. Incision lines will fade over time, and may take up to 12 months to fully heal.

After surgery, you will rest in a recovery room before heading home, usually after about an hour. Your breasts will be wrapped in gauze dressings and supported by a bandeau or surgical bra to reduce swelling and provide support as they heal. You may be prescribed pain medication or antibiotics to prevent infection.

It is typical to experience acute pain or soreness for the first week or so. Most patients return to work within one week of surgery, though full recovery usually takes about six weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

On average, breast implants last 10 years. Some patients may need to have their implants replaced due to aging, implant rupture or leakage, hardening or capsular contracture.

The initial breast augmentation recovery period involves some pain, which is typically manageable with prescribed medication. The first week is generally the most uncomfortable, and patients may experience soreness, tightness, and swelling for a few weeks after surgery.

Breast augmentation increases the size of the breasts, while a breast lift (mastopexy) lifts and reshapes sagging, also known as ptosis, breasts. In some cases, both procedures can be done together for optimal results.

Silicone implants provide the most natural breast augmentation.  The most common shape for a silicone implant is a round implant.  Tear drop silicone implants are another less frequently utilized option.. A fat transfer breast augmentation is another option for natural looking results, which uses your body fat instead of implants.

In general, it’s best to wait until after having children for breast augmentation surgery, as pregnancy and breastfeeding can affect breast shape and volume, potentially impacting your results.

Most patients typically take about one week off work to recover from the breast augmentation procedure, depending on their job and how they feel. However, strenuous activities should be avoided for six weeks.
