About labiaplasty

What is labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that aims to reduce the size and proportions of the labia minora, the inner folds of the vulva. This procedure reduces the length of labia minora so that it no longer hangs below the labia majora, the outer folds.

As the most commonly performed aesthetic genital plastic surgery, labiaplasty can address concerns such as self-consciousness about appearance, irritation from twisting or tugging, and asymmetry where one is longer than the other.

Labiaplasty candidacy

Am I a good candidate for labiaplasty?

During your private consultation, we’ll have a discussion to determine whether you’re a good candidate for this procedure. Ideally, you should be in good health and done having children, as stretching may occur during pregnancy and childbirth.

Most patients choose to undergo labiaplasty for cosmetic reasons as well as to improve comfort in tight clothing or a swimsuit or to alleviate discomfort or pain during certain physical activities or sexual intimacy.

WITH LABIAPLASTY, WE CAN FIX:

  • Overly large or misshapen labia

  • Longer or sagging labia that “hangs”

  • Uneven labia, where one is longer than the other

  • Physical discomfort from twisting or tugging

  • Elongated labia due to pregnancy, childbirth, hormonal changes, or genetic disposition

About labiaplasty

Types of labiaplasty procedures

The two most common techniques for reducing the labia minora are a trim procedure and wedge procedure. Extra folds of the clitoral hood can also be reduced at the same time.

The trim procedure is the most widely used labiaplasty procedure. In this procedure, the excess tissue is removed and sutured so that it is flush with the labia majora, or the outer folds.

In a wedge procedure, only a partial pie-shaped piece of tissue is removed from the thickest part of the labia minora. This preserves the wrinkled edges, giving the labia a natural look after surgery.

Expectations

What to expect throughout your labiaplasty procedure

Labiaplasty can be performed under local anesthesia with oral sedation or general anesthesia. Your plastic surgeon will discuss which option is best for you during your consultation.

During the procedure, we will make small incisions in the labia majora or minora, remove the excess tissue, and shape and tighten the remaining tissue. Once the procedure is done, we will carefully close the incisions, usually with absorbable sutures. The entire procedure is typically performed in one hour and you are able to go home the same day.

During your pre-operative appointments, your doctor and surgical team will discuss every step of the process with you in detail.

Labiaplasty recovery

Results and recovery process

Following labiaplasty, the labia will be shorter and no longer extend outward. The total recovery process generally takes four to six weeks, although residual swelling may take up to six months to fully subside, allowing you to see the final results.

During the first week, you will likely experience mild pain and swelling. Your doctor may prescribe pain medication or antibiotics to manage pain and reduce inflammation. You’ll need to avoid wearing tight clothing and undergarments and engaging in physical activity for four to six weeks after surgery.

Most patients are able to return to work within three to five days and can begin light exercise after two to three weeks. Using tampons and sexual activity are typically allowed after four weeks, or once you have been cleared by your plastic surgeon.

Frequently Asked Questions

There’s several reasons why someone might get labiaplasty, including physical discomfort caused by the size or length of their labia. Many find relief from pain or irritation during activities like biking or sexual intercourse, while others seek improved aesthetic appeal or a more youthful appearance after childbirth.

Labiaplasty does not affect sensation or pleasure and you won’t lose feeling or sexual function. By reducing the size of the labia, many patients experience less pain and more enjoyment during sex.

We will assess whether you qualify for labiaplasty during your consultation. Generally, good candidates are females experiencing discomfort or dissatisfaction with their labial appearance and who are in good overall health.

It’s best if patients are physically mature or fully developed, which is usually after 18 years. The average age of women who have labiaplasty are around 32-33 years old.

We use anesthesia so that the procedure itself is painless. While discomfort levels vary among individuals, labiaplasty is typically associated with mild discomfort that can be managed with over-the-counter or prescribed pain medications.

Typically, it takes about six weeks for the swelling to go down and for the labia to start looking more normal after labiaplasty. However, full healing can take up to four to six months, during which the final results will become visible.

As with any surgical procedure, you will have some scarring. However, scars left from labiaplasty are typically very small and tend to blend in with the natural folds of the labia, making them less visible as they heal.
